Newly Admitted Students
What happens once I'm admitted?
There is a lot to find out about once you are admitted.
A good place to start is to review the main univerisity webpage for Newly Admitted Students and "I'm admitted...what's next?" - which provides guidance on everything from student advising to attending orientation and getting a campus tour, getting scholarships and loans, purchasing text books, registering for a room in residence, securing a free hallway locker, getting your student ID, and paying your tuition.
UR Self-Service
One of the most important tools a student at the University of Regina needs to use is UR Self-Service. UR Self-Service provides access to a range of important student services. Students use this to look up what courses are being offered, register for courses, print course schedules and text book lists, purchase text books, pay tuition and fees, print tax forms, view grades and transcripts, etc. You should familiarize yourself with UR Self-Service by first viewing the main university UR Self-Service webpage.
University Webmail
University of Regina students also receive a free, University of Regina email account. It is very important that you check your email account regularly, as the University and the Engineering Applied Science staff use these email accounts to provide students with important notices and updates, as well as other important communications. Information about your webmail account and how to access it can be found at www.uregina.ca/webmail. You can access your webmail and learn how to log in at the Webmail link.
Student Photo ID Cards
Your Student ID card is very important. You use this photo ID card to check books out of the library, register to vote on student union matters, and get student discounts! You should note that you will need to have your ID card activated at the main Archer Library before you can access the online library databases. For more information on Student ID cards, including how to get yours, please visit the main university page on Student IDs.
Calculators and Laboratory Access Cards
All first-year engineering students are provided with Faculty-approved calculators and with electronic access cards to student labs within the first few weeks of classes. The calculators are to be used for all assignments and in all exams unless otherwise indicated.
How do I register for classes?
Students register for classes via UR Self-Service. The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers registration tutorials for newly admitted students. Please call 585-4734 or 337-2603 to sign up.
Note that all first-year students take the same common core of classes: first semester classes include CHEM 104 - General Chemistry I, ENGG 123 - Engineering Design and Communications, MATH 122 - Linear Algebra I, PHYS 109 - General Physics I and MATH 110 - Calculus I.
Also note that the maximum full-time load is 15 credit hours, 5 classes plus labs/seminars. The first year is timetabled for first year students.
What should I do if I decide not to take a class after I've registered/how do I drop a class?
It is very important to remember that once you have registered for a class, you must officially drop it through UR Self-Service registration if you change your mind about taking the course. If you do not drop the course, you will be responsible for paying for it and you will receive a failing grade in the course that will appear on your transcript if you do not complete the class. The requirement to officially drop classes also applies if you register for classes at U of R and then decide not to attend. If you are registered in a class, we assume that you are attending it.
Also note that to receive a full or partial refund for your class, you must drop it within a certain time once the class has started. The course drop date schedule can be found in the University calendar and on the main university page under Academic Schedules.

The Faculty of Science provides free Supplemental Instruction for selected first- and second-year science courses. These additional instruction and study sessions provide students with an extra opportunity to hear, learn, and ask questions about material from their classes. We encourage all of our Engineering students to participate in these sessions whenever possible. They help our students improve their level of success. For more information, see the Faculty of Science newsletter article on Supplemental Instruction.
The Regina Engineering Students' Society can also arrange for supplementat tutorials for larger groups of students who would like addition instruction for a course. Contact the RESS for more information.
