Referencing

Referencing in Engineering is a little less uniform than it is other disciplines. Like other technical disciplines, Engineering tends to utilize American Psychological Association (APA) format for referencing but typically with some adaptations.

Different journals and publishers will have different standards, so it is important that you check for the recommended reference format.  Different employers and organizations might have specific guidelines for referencing as well. However, when in doubt, use APA.

One formatting style that is consistent within certain engineering disciplines is the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) style. Information on publishing with IEEE can be found here.  An IEEE referencing guide can be downloaded from here.

Students and Faculty at the University of Regina can also use RefWorks, an online referencing tool that allows you to collect, save, and organize citations and insert them, in the desired format, directly into documents.  For more information on RefWorks and how to use it, visit the RefWorks site on the U of R Library homepage.
